The Trinity Field

Back to News Index

A TERRACOTTA army of more than two thousand figures has gone on display at a school in Thorne in a recreation of a major art installation.

For the last year, students, staff and visitors to Trinity Academy have contributed to ‘The Field', the school's version of Antony Gormley's famous work.

The figures were modelled in clay and fired in 30 separate firings to complete the project, which was unveiled during Arts Week.

Head of art and design at Trinity Academy, Laura Howlett, explained: "I thought it would be a great way of bringing students and staff together in one piece of work.

"Everyone was given a lump of clay to shape into their own figure. They weren't allowed to add anything or take away any clay, and they had to hollow out each piece.

"The end result is a fantastic variety of figures with some really interesting expressions and variations in colour due to some being fired twice. The idea of the work is to show unity in community but at the same time show how every one is individual."

The Academy offers a full range of creative arts subjects at GCSE and A level including textiles, fine art, photography and art craft and design.
