The Wiz

Students put on a wizard performance after rehearsing for months to stage an annual musical spectacular.

Technicians and a cast of 40, including some teachers, have transformed the hall at Trinity Academy into a magical kingdom at the end of the rainbow in Thorne.

Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion will be fighting off the wicked witch Evillene as they set off on a musical quest in front of an audience of civic dignitaries, parents and friends.

The Wiz, a 1970s adaptation of the classic tale The Wizard of Oz, was performed at Trinity Academy from Wednesday 27th Feb until Friday 29th Feb.

The production stars Simone Stanley as Evillene, Toni Goulden as Dorothy, April Garth as Lion, Rob Lee as Tinman, Sophie Beggs as Scarecrow and teacher Gareth Dickinson as The Wiz.

Assistant vice principal Nick Mather said: "The Wiz is an updated version of the Wizard of Oz featuring 1970s songs and effects.

"Students worked on it since September and we had to create the spectacular stage from nothing as this is normally a multi-purpose hall."

In the early stages the cast, aged 11 to 19, rehearsed twice a week, increasing this to four times and latterly every night to polish their performances.

"It was hard work and required a massive commitment on behalf of students," added Mr Mather.

"This is the third production we have put on following on from the successes of Joseph and Oliver, and each year we try to move the levels of scale and professionalism.

Musical director Jane Orsborn added: "This is not a typical musical. It is fast-paced, funky and exciting and we are all really thrilled about it hitting the stage."
