Sports Review Dinner 2010

Back to News Index

TEAM talent and individual dedication have been recognised at an academy's end of year sports review and awards presentation.

A year of success in a range of sports, but football, netball, hockey and athletics in particular, was celebrated at the event at The King's Academy.

More than 180 students from all year groups at the Coulby Newham school made a special effort for the event, which included dinner served to them by catering staff.

Principal Chris Drew told them: "This is our third annual sports review and it is a celebration of your success and a thank you for your commitment, your excellent sportsmanship, good manners on the sports field and teamwork.

"We should also say a big thank you to the coaches and staff who work very hard on your behalf."

Head of sport Bill Swanson said the Academy had been involved in 206 activities and fixtures during the year, with around 400 students taking part.

There was special mention for rugby players from The King's, who were selected in record numbers to join boys from their sister schools in the Emmanuel Schools Foundation (ESF) in a playing tour of Scotland.

For their part, four King's girls have been selected to play in the ESF Pumas, a hockey squad made up of the four schools' best players, also touring later this year.

The Year 11 football team were Middlesbrough Schools league and tournament winners, while the Year 10 squad made it to the last 16 of the National Cup, which attracts 900 teams from across the country.

The Year 9 netball squad were Middlesbrough School league and tournament winners. The Year 7a team won their league and were runners-up in the tournament, while the Year 7b team were joint tournament winners and runners-up in the league.

In athletics, Year 7 and Year 9 girls, and Year 10 boys were overall winners, while the Intermediate girls won the Middlesbrough Schools Cross Country Championships.

PE teacher John Stewart, who hosted the event, said the individual award nominees were put forward by their team coaches, with the winners chosen in department meetings.
