Engineering

Accommodation consists of 3 well equipped workshops, a technician's store and preparation room and an ICT room. The Head of Department also has an office.

 

Resources and equipment are to a high standard. Digital data projectors are available in every Engineering room. The ICT room has internet/intranet access, staff and students' shared area. A Soundfield system is available also in every Engineering room to facilitate Hearing Impaired students.

 

The department prides itself in having facilities of the highest level of technology. The ICT room houses our laser cutter, with projects across all Key Stages accessing this facility. A CNC router, miller and lathe are also available for Key Stage 4 and 5 students. PCB making equipment is available for Electronics with CAD applications available through high level software. A heat bay accommodates a brazing hearth, fluidising tank and a vacuum forming machine. The department also has sublimation printing facilities.

 

Staffing consists of 5 full time teachers, 1 part time teacher and a full time technician.

  • Mr J Smith - Second in Department - GCSE Resistant Materials
  • Mr A Ross - GCSE Resistant Materials
  • Mrs S Smith - GCSE Graphic Products
  • Mr S Brown - Entry Level
  • Mr D Martin - Preparation of materials and stock control. In addition Mr Martin builds the props for the school productions.

 

Course Outline/Overview

 

Key Stage 3

 

All students study Engineering at this Key Stage. The students do a range of projects that develop their knowledge of materials, tools and processes. Projects include designing and making a Biscuit Cutter, Pencil Box, Photograph Frame, Moisture Sensor, Puzzle Game and a Clock.

 

Key Stage 4

 

Students choose from a range of options. The Engineering Department offers several courses -

  • GCSE Graphic Products
  • GCSE Resistant Materials
  • GCSE Engineering (Double Award)
  • Entry Level Resistant Materials (non GCSE)

 

Key Stage 5

 

A Level Product Design.

 

The Engineering subjects prove to be popular with both boys and girls emphasising the spectrum of appeal and diversity of courses.
