Going for Green!

Back to News Index

Even the clouds overhead couldn't dampen the Greenpower team's spirits as they set off for Croft Race Track on Wednesday 7 July for the first regional heat of the season for Emmanuel's environmentally-friendly car.

The whole team built the car after school with Technology teacher Mr Mustard to enter into the GreenPower challenge, an electrically-powered car racing series, along with hundreds of other schools from across the country.

The Sixth-Formers triumphed again in Formula 24+, with Christopher Richards and Uzair Qazi driving in the first race of the day, achieving 3rd place and another trophy to add to their collection.

After a quick adjustment, the Formula 24 (Year 9 and 10) set off with high hopes and were not disappointed as Jordan Coates and Rhys Rogers quickly found their way into the top five during the first hour of the four-hour race.

Gemma Irving, Rosie Hewitson, Katy Watson and Catherine Whittock finished the last few hours; however, a battery problem left us in 8th position overall: still a huge improvement from our last race at Croft!

Gemma, a first time driver of the car, said: "It was so amazing!  I was scared at first but once I got going I was having so much fun.  I'm glad I took part in the club, and hope I can do it again soon!"

The team will be going to Aintree later in September for the second of their regional heats, together with their newly built Year 9 car, and hopefully will win a place at the finals at Goodwood later in the year!
