Industry Day 2010

Back to News Index

ENTERPRISING students have been engineering their futures at a special industry day.

Experts from some of the world's leading companies spent the day at Bede Academy, in Blyth, working with young people and inspiring them about possibilities for the careers ahead of them.

The Academy has specialisms in engineering and enterprise as it strives to educate students in technical intelligence.

Leading engineering companies, including Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and British Engines Ltd, staged an array of workshops giving students an insight into industry.

Students were briefed on industries ranging from architecture to deep sea pipe-laying and valve engineering. They also got to study equipment close at hand and take part in practical exercises such as bridge building.

Bede Academy director of engineering Mark Davies said: "Days like this are imperative. They give the students foresight of why they are doing what they are doing; they link everything together and the experience brings home why they are here.

"The continual academic push is challenging for them and sessions like this are something to work towards.

"Things they learn from industry could form the hook they need to inspire them to reach their full potential."
